David

Chief Technology Officer

How long have you worked in your role/s?

5 years in total, 2 years in my current position

What’s your role?

As CTO I am responsible for the technical direction that we take, and ensuring that it is aligned with our core values; good for healthcare, good for staff, good for the business. In healthcare, IT systems are often maintained for a long time and serve critical roles contributing to patient outcomes. Therefore, taking a holistic and pragmatic approach to technology selection and architectural design is important, to ensure that healthcare workers are given the best tools to fulfil their roles.

At Aire Logic, I look after that team that builds our healthtech low-code platform, AireSuite, as well as a number of teams working on bespoke system development. At the heart of this role is the need for a keen understanding of the software development lifecycle, DevOps, Agile, engineering principles and technical architecture. Remaining hands-on at every opportunity, I maintain my connection to the ever-changing landscape of software development that underpins most of what we do.

However, healthcare IT is a problem domain which is rich in nuance, complexity and legacy. Understanding the national systems, interoperability efforts, integration patterns and governance practices that shape healthcare systems is a crucial part of my role. Serving as a bridge between technical, commercial and clinical audiences is key to making sure teams can interface effectively and gain shared understanding.

What inspired you to work in the tech industry?

Having always been technically minded, it was natural to move towards software engineering. Over time I realised that I have a broader business skill set, and am able to take a commercial viewpoint when needed to balance some of the tensions applied to software delivery. Some of my earliest memories of dealing with tech come from being a child and earning my pocket money by running the backup process for my dad’s company accounts - it involved a shoebox full of 3½-inch floppy disks!

What do you like about working at Aire Logic?

Working with some of the most talented people in the industry, and knowing that you’re always working on something which has a net positive impact on society.
