Aire Logic invests in the UK’s first shared solar park

Collaborating with Ripple's shared solar park will pave the way for achieving the company’s 2030 net zero emissions target.

Our investment

Aire Logic is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2030 and has several carbon-reduction projects to help hit this goal. One is an investment in the UK’s first shared solar park. Ripple’s Solar Park, based in Derril Water, Devon, will have about 70,000 panels producing up to 42MW of green electricity.

Over the 40-year project, Aire Logic’s investment will save 2 tonnes of carbon annually. This is equivalent to our predicted annual carbon emissions from electricity usage in our Leeds and Manchester offices.

In addition to the solar park, there will be scope to diversify with an investment in Ripple’s Wind Farm when offerings open later in the year.

Aire Logic, an employee-owned business

Involvement in the scheme was suggested by Aire Logic’s Green Guild as a way to work towards the company’s net zero commitment, and employee ownership meant that after consultation, the idea could be quickly converted into positive action without delay. The Green Guild is a voluntary committee of like-minded, environmentally conscious staff who meet monthly to discuss green topics. The group’s primary focus is to reduce Aire Logic’s environmental impact.

Ripple Energy: how it works

Ripple Energy allows its customers to become part owners of a solar park or wind farm by purchasing shares in a cooperative. The one-off payment funds the construction, which takes up to 20 months to complete. Once construction is completed, an energy supplier buys the electricity from the project and supplies it to domestic and business users via the grid. Investors then save the difference between the market price of electricity and the low steady running costs of the solar park or wind farm.

In the case of Derril Water Solar Park, construction and energisation are planned to be completed by Summer 2024.
